Super Eagles Battle Lesotho in Must-Win Clash to Keep World Cup Dreams Alive

All eyes will be on the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in South Africa this Friday as the Super Eagles face Lesotho’s Crocodiles in a decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

For Nigeria, it’s do-or-die. After a frustrating 1-1 draw with South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on September 1, hopes of qualifying for the World Cup seemed to fade — until a twist of fate reignited their campaign. South Africa were docked points for fielding an ineligible player, tightening the race in Group C and giving the Super Eagles a lifeline.

With two matches remaining, Nigeria sit third with 11 points — just three behind joint leaders Benin and South Africa. To keep their qualification hopes alive, the Eagles must avoid defeat in both remaining games, starting with Friday’s showdown against Lesotho in Polokwane.

They’ll also be hoping for South Africa to slip up in their upcoming fixtures against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

Lesotho, who held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Uyo last November, will be eyeing another upset. Since 2019, both sides have met three times, with Nigeria winning twice and one draw.

As it stands, Benin top Group C with 14 points and a +4 goal difference, followed by South Africa (14 points, +2). Nigeria trail with 11 points and a +2 difference, while Rwanda lurk close behind on 11 points and zero goal difference.

With two wins, five draws, and one loss so far, the Super Eagles’ qualifying run has been shaky — but victory in Polokwane could keep their World Cup dream alive.

Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. Nigerian time) at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.
