The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has shut down Bond Chemicals Industries Limited in Oyo State over alleged breaches of environmental regulations.
The agency said the action followed a public complaint, which was later confirmed through independent verification, indicating that the company was discharging untreated effluent into the environment.
In a statement on Wednesday, Assistant Director (Press), Nwamaka Ejiofor, said a compliance inspection carried out by officials from NESREA’s South West Zonal Office on February 18, 2026, revealed that the facility lacked a functional Effluent Treatment Plant. The inspection also found that untreated wastewater with offensive odour was being released directly into the environment, in violation of regulatory standards.
According to the agency, the company was notified after the initial inspection and instructed to address the infractions by installing an appropriate treatment system and obtaining the required permits.
However, a follow-up visit showed that the directives were not implemented, prompting NESREA to seal off the facility in line with its enforcement mandate.
Director-General of NESREA, Innocent Barikor, emphasised the need for strict compliance with environmental laws, warning that industries must install and properly operate pollution control equipment.
He added that the agency would intensify monitoring nationwide and take action against any organisation found violating environmental standards.
NESREA stated that the factory will remain closed until it meets all regulatory requirements, noting that further investigations and compliance checks are ongoing.
