Nigeria’s Super Eagles have booked a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria at the Stade de Marrakech.
The win sets up a last-four encounter against hosts Morocco, who progressed after defeating Cameroon in their quarter-final clash.
Nigeria came into the match brimming with confidence following a crushing 4–0 win over Mozambique in the Round of 16, taking their tournament goal tally to 12 from four matches — the highest at AFCON 2025. Algeria, on the other hand, were unbeaten before the quarter-final and had conceded just once, earning a reputation for defensive solidity.
From the opening whistle, the Super Eagles asserted control, dominating possession and pressing aggressively. Victor Osimhen spearheaded the attack with pace and strength, supported by Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams, while Alex Iwobi dictated play from midfield, effectively linking defence and attack.
Nigeria created several clear chances in the first half, with Akor Adams missing a one-on-one opportunity and another effort cleared off the line. Despite sustained pressure, Algeria held firm defensively, relying on goalkeeper Luca Zidane to keep them in contention while looking to counterattack.
The breakthrough arrived in the second half when Osimhen rose powerfully to head Nigeria into the lead. The Super Eagles maintained their dominance, and Akor Adams doubled the advantage moments later, finishing clinically after being set up by Osimhen.
Wilfred Ndidi anchored the midfield with authority, breaking up Algerian attacks, while Nigeria’s full-backs and wingers stretched the opposition defence, creating space and maintaining attacking momentum.
Algeria introduced fresh legs in a bid to stage a comeback, but Nigeria’s defensive discipline and composure ensured they saw out the game comfortably.
With the victory, the Super Eagles march into the AFCON 2025 semi-finals, where they will face Morocco as they continue their quest for continental glory.
