Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered a dominant performance on Monday night, dismantling Mozambique 4–0 in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Round of 16 to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament in Morocco.
The Super Eagles took control early, opening the scoring in the 20th minute through Ademola Lookman, whose composed finish set the tone for the encounter.
Victor Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s advantage before half-time and struck again shortly after the restart to take his tally to two goals on the night. Akor Adams completed the rout in the 75th minute, sealing one of Nigeria’s most convincing wins of the competition.
The emphatic victory produced several key records and statistical milestones for the Super Eagles:
- Largest Winning Margin of the Tournament: Nigeria’s four-goal win is the biggest victory recorded so far at the 2025 AFCON, making them the first team in this edition to score four goals in a single match.
- Highest Goals Tally: The Super Eagles have now scored 12 goals in four matches, the most by any team at this stage of the competition, maintaining a perfect record of four wins from four.
- First Clean Sheet: The match marked Nigeria’s first clean sheet of the tournament, underlining their growing defensive solidity alongside a potent attack.
- Extended Scoring Run: Nigeria has now scored in every AFCON match played this decade, sustaining a remarkable scoring consistency at the continental level.
The result also underscored the developing attacking partnership between Osimhen and Lookman, both of whom continue to feature prominently among the tournament’s top contributors in goals and chances created.
Mozambique, appearing in the AFCON knockout stages for the first time, showed moments of resilience but were ultimately outclassed in Fes by a sharper and more clinical Nigerian side.
Nigeria will now await the winner of the tie between Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo as they intensify their quest for a fourth AFCON title.
